Tournament Overview: The 14th Edition of the Cricket World Cup
The 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup marks the 14th edition of cricket's premier quadrennial championship. Organised by the International Cricket Council (ICC) since 1975, the ODI World Cup is contested by the leading national men's teams from around the globe. Following the 10-team tournament held in India in 2023, where Australia captured their record sixth title by defeating India in the final, the 2027 tournament expands to a 14-team field with 57 high-octane matches scheduled between 4 October and 21 November 2027.
This historic event marks the second time that South Africa and Zimbabwe have co-hosted the tournament, reviving memories of the celebrated 2003 edition, while Namibia will make history as a first-time co-host of a global senior World Cup. To ensure cricket fans never miss a boundary, WebCric provides full ball-by-ball commentary, real-time ICC Team Rankings, and lag-free free live cricket streaming on WebCric.
New Tournament Format: Super Series, Group Stage & Super 7
On 15 July 2026, the ICC officially announced an innovative, fast-paced format designed to elevate match competitiveness and streamline the tournament duration while retaining a diverse 14-nation roster. The 2027 World Cup will feature four thrilling stages:
| Stage | Phase Name | Matches | Structure & Progression Rules |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round 1 | Super Series (Play-in Round) | 3 matches | The 3 lowest-seeded teams in the 14-team field compete in a round-robin pool. The winner earns the 12th spot in the main second round. |
| Round 2 | Main Group Stage | 30 matches | The 12 teams are divided into two groups of six. Each team plays 5 round-robin matches. The top 3 teams from each group plus the best 4th-placed team across both groups (7 teams total) advance to the Super 7. |
| Round 3 | Super 7 Stage | 21 matches | The 7 qualified teams battle in a single round-robin league. The top 4 teams in the Super 7 table qualify for the Semi-Finals. |
| Knockouts | Semi-Finals & Final | 3 matches | Semi-Final 1 (1st vs 4th) • Semi-Final 2 (2nd vs 3rd) • World Cup 2027 Final (Winners of SF1 vs SF2) on November 21, 2027. |
Tournament Organisation & Preparations
Preparations for the 2027 Cricket World Cup moved into top gear following the finalisation of a 15-member Organising Committee in August 2025. Former South African Minister of Finance Trevor Manuel was appointed Chair of the committee. Renowned international leader and former Deputy President of South Africa, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, was appointed as one of the seven independent directors overseeing logistics, infrastructure, and commercial execution.
Across the co-hosting nations, stadiums and training complexes are undergoing state-of-the-art upgrades to support broadcast feeds, floodlight technology, and fan experiences. Read in-depth tournament previews and analysis on our Cricket Articles Hub.
Qualification Pathways: Who Plays in World Cup 2027?
The 14-team qualification framework is governed by a merit-based qualification pathway:
- Automatic Host Qualifiers (2 Teams): South Africa and Zimbabwe qualify automatically as Full Member co-hosts.
- Direct ICC ODI Rankings Qualifiers (8 Teams): The top 8 teams in the official ICC Men's ODI Team Rankings as of 30 September 2026 (excluding hosts) earn direct entry into the tournament. Currently, heavyweight sides like India, Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, England, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh are battling for direct ranking slots.
- 2027 World Cup Qualifier (4 Teams): The remaining four berths will be contested at the 10-team global qualifier tournament scheduled from 22 February to 23 March 2027 in Namibia and South Africa.
- Namibia's Pathway: Although Namibia is co-hosting the World Cup for the first time, because they are an Associate Member rather than a Full ICC Member, they do not receive automatic qualification and must advance via the 2027 Qualifier pathway.
